Knife City
Knife crime is no joke in London. In August there was a total of 1,033 knife crimes in the city, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Each year, hundreds of people are arrested for having guns in their possession and although the number of knife
crimes each year has dropped, officials aren't letting up on the penalties for knife-wielders.
The government plans to raise the minimum jail sentence for people convicted of using a knife to murder someone from 15 years to 25 years. This all in response to a growing public concern over knife crime--particularly in a slew of fatal stabbings of teens.
"Knife crime, particularly among young people, is a high priority for the MPS," according to the Metropolitan police.
In an effort to reach out to teens, the department has started an anti-knife crime advertising campaign, "Choose a Different Ending." Here's one of the ads:
London police have a "stop and search" policy-- which authorizes officers to check suspicious persons for "dangerous objects or offensive weapon[s]."
"Carrying a knife. It's not a game," notes the Metropolitan Police.
